Field Trips

Field trips are opportunities for members to get out and take some pictures locally. They are educational and social opportunities, not competitions. It doesn’t matter if you’re highly experienced or a novice – we will all enjoy and learn from each other’s vision.

Participants are encouraged to submit several images from each field trip for a slideshow.  Images can be color, black & white or creative. The submission instructions are below, and images may be used for future competition.

Lia Hotchkiss

E-mail up to five digital images to the slideshow manager. Images should follow the standard competition format:

  • The maximum image size should be 1400 x 1050 px.
  • The image file should be saved as a .jpg and should be no larger than 2 MB.
  • The color space should be sRGB.

This Field Trip will be devoted to portraying subjects that are hidden until fall reveals them. This theme lends itself to a variety of indoor and outdoor settings.

  • Photos must be taken from November 1-December 31.
  • They may be in color, monochrome, or creative.
  • Strive for a good composition and placement.
  • Any time of day or night is fine.
  • Up to five jpg images may be submitted for sharing.
  • Some ideas are: holidays, time change lighting, bare trees, stone walls, open pastures, county lanes, and anything “hidden” until fall comes and exposes it!

I have set up two photo shoots this fall at Wingmasters in Leverett, MA (near Amherst) to photograph birds of prey outside in trees. We will be within 10 feet of about 8 raptors (various hawks, falcons and owls) and this is open for those with dslrs, point and shoot and phone cameras too. The website for Wingmasters is here and they rehabilitate birds of prey for release or if non releasable they are used for their educational programs.

The trip will be on Saturday, October 29th from 9:00 – 11:00 am and 1:00 – 3:00 pm. The back up date is Saturday, November 5th (same times) and it will again be at Julie’s home (address will be provided closer to our photography date). We will meet at Julie’s house no earlier than 15 minutes before the photoshoot times to allow them to set up (8:45 a.m. and 12:45 p.m.).

There will only be 10 people and the cost will be $65 per person if we fill two sessions of 10 people each or $75 per person if we fill one session with 10 people. The fee for two sessions is $650 per session, one in the morning and one in the afternoon and each session had less than 10 people, the session fee would still be $650 for the morning and $650 for the afternoon. If we had one morning session only and there were less than 10 people, then it would still be $750 for the one morning session. Jim and Julie have increased their prices and as with so much else in this COVID world, the food for their birds has drastically increased. No matter what even the $65 or $75 per person cost is an amazing opportunity and we personally help Julie and Jim continue to rehabilitate birds and educate the public.

Please let me know if you are interested and which time slot you want me to hold for you. I only have a 2 afternoon slots open and 5 morning slots. As with prior trips, I will have you send prepayment to me and your spot will be confirmed once your payment is received.

Please also note: if for some reason you are unable to attend as you have signed up/prepaid, it is your responsibility to find an alternate person and work out the funds with that person. I must be provided the alternate person’s contact information and if you can not find an alternate, your $65 or $75 cost will be a donation to Wingmasters. I always have a waitlist so I may be able to provide possible alternates to anyone that can’t make it as intended but I can not guarantee it.

Please email me at ddonofrio@snet.net or call me at 203 558-2372 to sign up.

Thank you,
Debbie Koundry
